Jonathan Singleton Homers in Lakewood Debut

First basemen, Jonathan Singleton debuted for the Lakewood Blueclaws in a big way Thursday night by homering in his second at bat.  Singleton was drafted in the 8th round out of Long Beach, CA in last years draft.  This was surprising that he was drafted so low because he considered by many to be one of the best hitters coming out of high school in 2009.

Singleton had a very successful rookie season in the GCL, so much that during the offseason he soared up prospect lists.  Singleton didn't show as much power as expected in 2009 but displayed incredible contact and plate discipline for an 18-year old.  In 100 at bats in 2009, Singleton only had 11 extra base hits (2 HRs), but hit .290 with 18 walks compared to only 13 strikeouts.  The plate discipline that Singleton displayed is uncanny for someone so young.

To sum up, I expect great things for Singleton in 2010 and the fact that he hit a homerun in his first game is a great sign since power was the only skill that he lacked in 2009.
